CARROLLTON, GA – Local EMC’s, including Carroll EMC, Coweta-Fayette EMC and Diverse Power, joined Oglethorpe Power Corporation in presenting Oglethorpe Power’s 2016 ad valorem tax payment to the Heard County Tax Commissioner’s office.
The presentation took place at the Heard County courthouse in downtown Franklin. Along with Diane McClearen, representing Oglethorpe Power Corporation, board director Alvin Ginn of Carroll EMC joined chief operating officer Jerome Johnston in presenting the funds to the county. Other officials representing Heard County were Chairman Lee Boone and Tax Commissioner Jimmy Adams.
The payment, which totals more than $2.5 million this year, is for Oglethorpe Power’s 30 percent ownership of the Hal B. Wansley coal-fired plant, and its 100 percent ownership of the natural gas-powered Chattahoochee Energy Facility and Hawk Road Energy Facility, all in Heard County.
“These tax dollars will have a positive impact on the quality of life by helping to support the services Heard County provides, including education,” said Jerome Johnston, Carroll EMC chief operating officer.
Oglethorpe Power is a wholesale electric power cooperative owned by and serving 38 EMCs in Georgia, including Carroll EMC, Coweta-Fayette EMC and Diverse Power, which provide retail electric service in Heard County and other area counties.
Oglethorpe Power is paying more than $30 million in 2016 ad valorem taxes for power-generating facilities that it owns or co-owns on behalf of its Member EMCs throughout the state.
