(Carrollton, Ga. – January 11, 2017) Central High School has been named as one of only five high schools in the state of Georgia to be an AP Champion Award school. The College Board in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education selected Central High School as an award recipient based on the following considerations.
● The activity reflects the school’s efforts toward eliminating barriers that restrict access to AP courses for students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underserved.
● There is evidence of efforts to ensure that AP classes at the school reflect the diversity of the school’s student population.
● The activity illustrates intentions to build and sustain a positive culture around AP courses by celebrating both student participation and success.
● The activity was creative in promoting AP courses and encourages, engages, and excites students.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses offered by trained high school teachers in the regular high school setting. Central High School offers students AP courses in English, science, math, calculus and statistics, World History, U.S. History, and psychology. Nearly 350 students complete coursework in the AP sections offered at Central High School. Of those students, roughly 200 students took the AP test after completing the course.
Principal Mr. Jared Griffis commented, “I consider this award to be a great honor. Being 1 of 5 schools in the state of Georgia to be recognized is quite an accomplishment. Earning the award for two consecutive years speaks volumes to the diversity and excellence of our Advanced Placement program. This award is a further demonstration of the quality of the programs we offer our students at Central High School.”
